Facts, Concepts, and Theories: the Shape of Psychology’s Epistemic Triangle ?

چکیده
In this essay we introduce the idea of an epistemic triangle, with factual, theoretical, and conceptual investigations at its vertices, and argue that whereas scientific progress requires a balance among the three types of investigations, psychology’s epistemic triangle is stretched disproportionately in the direction of factual investigations. Expressed by a variety of different problems, this unbalance may be created by a main operative theme—the obsession of psychology with a narrow and mechanical view of the scientific method and a misguided aversion to conceptual inquiries. Hence, to redress psychology’s epistemic triangle, a broader and more realistic conception of method is needed and, in particular, conceptual investigations must be promoted. Using examples from different research domains, we describe the nature of conceptual investigations, relate them to theoretical investigations, and illustrate their purposes, forms, and limitations.

Knowledge, Trade-Offs, and Tracking Truth
There are so many ideas in Roush’s dashing yet meticulous book that it is hard to confine oneself to a manageable menu of issues. Here I will reluctantly omit discussion of scientific realism, fallibilism, contextualism, and much else. My focus will be on one core part of Roush’s account of the ‘‘tracking’’ of facts, and the relation between tracking and knowledge. In approaching rival ‘‘theori...
متن کاملMorphogenesis of epistemic networks: a case study
Agents producing and exchanging knowledge are forming as a whole a socio-semantic complex system. We argue that several significant aspects of the structure of a knowledge community are primarily produced by the co-evolution between agents and concepts, i.e. the evolution of an epistemic network. Focusing on a particular community of scientists working on a well-defined topic, we micro-found va...
متن کاملCollaborative Information Seeking Behavior: Concepts and Theories
Background and Aim: Collaborative information seeking is an interaction among members of a group who purposefully try to access and share joint information. Although collaboration is a key component of information seeking behavior, but most of the studies in this area are focused on individual information seeking behavior and collaborative aspects are considered much less. As a result, there is...
متن کاملTopological Models of Epistemic Set Theory
The standard set-theoretic formalization of classical mathematics is inadequate in the sense that it neglects the constructive aspect of ordinary mathematical practice. (For an extended argument to this effect, see [5].) Even classical mathematicians with no constructivistic scruples discuss what they can construct or compute. In a number of papers, including especially [3], I have proposed tha...
متن کاملEffects of Changes in Front Drafting Rollers Geometry on the Properties of Ring Spun Yarns
Regarding the importance of ring spinning method among spinning systems, great potentials exist for research about on the improvement of the quality and properties of ring spun yarn. This study aims to improve yarn quality by changing the shape and dimensions of spinning triangle through forming a groove in the middle zone of the front darfting
roller with a curvature of 5 to 7 mm. For the ...
